SmartMail Pilot - FAQ

Briefly few questions and answers.

01. Are there any pre-installation requirements?
Make sure that you have either Outlook or Notes installed on you PC/laptop/server where you intend to install the SmartMail connector. You also need to have used it with your account. If you are installing SmartMail connector in you own laptop or PC that you use daily you most likely already have Outlook or Notes installed.

02. Do I need to have local admin rights for installation?
No, you can install SmartMail pilot whitout local admin rights. It just does not install as service so you need to keep you account online on. This means that if you want SmartMail to work you can not log out from your account, if you do, then Smartmail will shutdown like any other software you have started.
If you install SmartMail with local admin rights then you can logout and SmartMail keeps working. Still if you shutdown your computer SmartMail will not continue to work.

03. SmartMail WE and hosted Exchange accounts?
Unfortunately currently SmartMail WE does not work with shared hosted Exchange accounts.

04. What devices are supported?
List of certified devices can be found from here. Certified device means that it has been tested in long test cycle and verified to work. A whole lot more devices are compatible and client can be installed to those, but it just has not been in our extended verification test to be listed. So if you have Symbian 60 v3 or v5 device like any new Nokia that is not listed, then Symbian 60 client most likely will work on it, but we just have not yet verified it yet.

...and iPhone is not currently supported.

05. Are there any special settings for laptop?
The SmartMail software creates a secure connection between your PC and SmartMail relayserver. SmartMail must be running on your PC for people in your workgroup installation to access email from a mobile phone. Disable automatic sleep or hibernation settings on your computer; they prevent the SmartMail software from staying connected. If you are logged into the network, you can lock your workstation by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete and choosing Lock Computer.

06. Is there anything special for POP3?
In some POP3 environments used with Microsoft Outlook clients, you may occasionally experience a send/receive error due to your mail server allowing only one connection to your account at a time. This error is temporary and occurs when both your PC and mobile phone are attempting to communicate with the mail server at the same time. To resolve this issue, consult your IT department.

Also note that when POP3 is used, only emails are synchronized, no calendar or contact data in transferred to you mobile device.

07. Domino and multiple address lists?
If your Domino environment uses multiple address lists, you will need to edit the Windows registry of the computer running the SmartManager Workgroup Edition software. You must add a new string value called NotesNamesDatabases under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SEVEN\AppServer\Global\Modules\ service.notes. For the value, enter the names of the address databases separated by commas (,). You must then manually refresh the global address list by choosing Actions | Refresh Global Address List in the console for your changes to take effect. Create a back-up copy of the registry before making any changes. Consult your IT department for more information.

07. How to enable contact synchronization for Lotus Domino?
  • Log in to your Domino server as an administrator.
  • Select the Files tab.
  • Select the Mail folder.
  • Select the user database (for example, user.nsf).
  • Choose Tools | Database | Manage ACL.
  • Select the user record.
Note: You must perform these steps for each user individually. Do not attempt to modify multiple users.
  • Ensure that the following attributes are configured:
    • Designer is specified for the Access field.
    • The Create LotusScript/Java agents check box is selected.
  • Before installing the SmartMail client, manually synchronize the user’s contacts (this will streamline the initial contacts synchronization process on their phone):
    • Log in to the user account through the Notes client.
    • Open Mail.
    • Choose Actions | Synchronize Address Book.
  • After installing the SmartMail client and activating the SmartMail services, activate automatic contacts synchronization:
    • Log in to the user account through the Notes client.
    • Open Mail.
    • Choose Actions | Automatic contact sync – Enable. To use the contacts synchronization service in a Lotus Domino environment, end users must have “Designer” privileges for their mailbox. Ensure that permissions are properly set before any of your end users have activated their SmartMail account.
